Sterilisation

Natural Family Planning

A small soft, plastic ring that you place inside your vagina that releases a continuous dose of oestrogen and progestogen into the bloodstream to prevent pregnancy

Vaginal Ring

A 'T' shaped plastic and copper device that's inserted into the vagina by a health professional and releases hormones to prevent pregnancy

Intrauterine System (IUS)

A 'T' shaped plastic and copper device that's inserted into the vagina by a health professional and releases copper to prevent pregnancy

Intrauterine Device (IUD)

A small sticky patch that releases hormones into your body through your skin to prevent pregnancy

Contraceptive Patch

An injection that releases hormones into your bloodstream to prevent pregnancy and lasts for 8 or 13 weeks, depending on the type.

Contraceptive Injection

A small flexible plastic rod that is placed under your skin in the upper arm, releasing hormones into the bloodstream to prevent pregnancy and lasts for 3 years

Contraceptive Implant

A circular dome made of soft thin silicone that is inserted into the vagina before sex, covering the cervix so the sperm can't fertilise an egg

Caps and Diaphragms

A pill that is usually taken everyday at the same time for 21 days; the stopped for 7 days before starting the cycle again. However, the way you take it depends on the type of combined pill you take. The 3 types are Monophasic 21 day pill – each pill has the same amount of hormones in it Phasic 21 day pill – 2 or 3 different pills that contains different amounts of hormone, these pills need to be taken in the right order Everyday (ED) pill – 21 active pills and 7 dummy pills which need to be taken in the right order, 1 pill a day for 28 days with no break

The Pill

Condoms are thin, stretchy pouches that you wear on your penis during sex, to stop sperm from getting into the vagina. Condoms also prevent sexually transmitted infections by covering the penis, thus preventing and limiting contact that can spread infections.
