A small flexible plastic rod that is placed under your skin in the upper arm, releasing hormones into the bloodstream to prevent pregnancy and lasts for 3 years

How effective are they?

More than 99% effective. They work for three years but can be taken out earlier. Fewer than 1 in 100 women using the implant will get pregnant in a year.

What are the advantages?

  • Once implanted you don’t have to think about it again for 3 years,
  • Can be removed at any time and your natural fertility will return,
  • Can be taken out if you have side effects,
  • It may reduce heavy or painful periods,
  • Doesn’t interrupt sex.

What are the risks?

  • Doesn’t protect against sexually transmitted infections,
  • The area of skin were implanted may get infected.

What makes them less effective?

  • You may experience temporary side effects during the first months such as mood swings, headaches, nausea and tender breasts,
  • Some medicines can make the implant less effective,
  • Your periods may get irregular or stop altogether,
